The University of Central Florida has canceled classes and decided to stop most campus operations on Wednesday in anticipation of Hurricane Idalia, which is expected to pass west of the Orlando campus but bring heavy rain and wind to the area.
The school plans to continue normal operations until the end of the day and resume classes and activities on Thursday.
Other Central Florida schools also said they planned to cancel classes on Wednesday, including Valencia College and Seminole State College. Rollins College said it will not hold in-person classes. Faculty members are to move to the hurricane plans outlined in their syllabi, which could include different forms of instruction.
At UCF, some campus dining facilities and student services will be open on Wednesday for students who live on campus. Residence halls are to remain open and the school is not encouraging residents to leave.
Additional grocery shuttles are planned to run today at the main and downtown Orlando campuses.
The university plans to open the John C. Hitt Library, Recreation and Wellness Center and Student Union at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
UCF’s first football game of the season against Kent State is still scheduled to go on as planned. Kick off is at 7 p.m. Thursday at FBC Mortgage Stadium.
