Boys teams from The First Academy and Lake Mary Prep are in better position to claim a championship with 18 holes to go on the El Campeon Course after Tuesday.

TFA shot 301 and trails Benjamin School of Palm Beach by 3 shots. Lake Mary Prep is 5 shots back at 303.

TFA was led by sophomore Mingbo Jiang with 71. That puts him five strokes behind leader Alexander Weinberg of Pine Crest. Palmer Haynes is close behind with 73 for the Royals.

Lake Mary Prep in 2020 was the last local boys team to take home a 1A title.

“I’m very happy with how we played today in tough conditions with rain off and on and some wind,” Griffins coach Brent Herold said. “We had some unlucky things happen to some of the guys, but we’re in a good position.”

One of the unlucky holes was No. 4 for senior Barry Zhang, who is in 11th place with 74. His tee shot veered toward the left rough, but he was unable to find the ball in the allotted time. That meant teeing off again, and the result was a double bogey.

“Those two shots [above par] would’ve put us tied for second,” Herold said.

In girls play, Florida Atlantic University High School of Boca Raton shot a 282 team total and is nine shots ahead of TFA (291), which is one of four area private schools that have dominated 1A competition.

Scores were collectively lower for girls on the Las Colinas Course. TFA junior Mi Li, the reigning 1A state champion and Orlando Sentinel Player of the Year, is in first place with an opening 66.

Li shot 66 to win last year’s 1A individual title and led TFA to its fourth team championship in six years. The second round of play was canceled due to complications caused by Hurricane Nicole.

“It was a rough start for us today, but I’m proud with how the team fought until the end,” Royals’ coach Victoria Tanco said. “Mi played lights out again with five birdies and the rest pars.”

Montverde Academy senior Victoria Renzi shot 67 and is in second place, one shot ahead of Windermere Prep eighth grader Ava Zhang (68).

Circle Christian sophomore Isabella Dovhey and Lake Mary Prep senior Nancy Dai shot 2-under-par 70s.

Lake Mary 3-peats as FHSAA 3A girls golf state champion https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/11/lake-mary-fhsaa-3a-girls-golf-champions/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 00:20:59 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11954754 HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS — No matter what sport or level of play, the expectation of winning brings with it plenty of pressure. Much of that is self-induced.

But the Lake Mary girls golf team overcame that pressure to win another Class 3A state title Saturday at Mission Inn-Las Colinas Golf Course.

The Rams posted a two-day score of 600 (298-302) to defeat runner-up Doral by 53 strokes. It’s their third straight title and 10th overall.

The win extends Central Florida’s dominance in girls golf with at least one team state champ for the 19th consecutive season.

“The girls feel like everyone expects them to win, so the challenge is to make sure they focus without thinking about that [on the course],” said Rams coach Dennis Burchill after receiving a balloon from his players on Veterans Day in honor of his service. “I tell the girls this is a great experience every year and to take it all in since each year and title is different.”

Orlando area shines in FHSAA girls golf championship race (again)

St. Cloud was fourth with 659. DeLand was fifth at 662, led by the top local finisher McKenzie Coody. The senior was tied for fourth with 145 after carding four straight birdies on the back nine.

“It was a nice feeling getting those birdie on the 10th through 13th holes after having to grind through yesterday’s round,” said Coody, who was one shot off the lead after that streak. “Once I bogeyed 16, that took a toll emotionally.”

This was the first time DeLand’s girls golf team advanced to the state tournament.

Lake Mary’s Ryleigh Knaub was in contention early on the back nine before a pair of bad holes dropped her to a tie for seventh with 146.

“It’s really hard to stay positive, but I can smile about it now,” she said. “The team won and that’s more important.”

The junior said Mission Inn’s Las Colinas course doesn’t match up with her game as well as others.

Besides the team win, another bit of good news for Knaub is that she finalized her college choice just before the state finals after months of visits. She committed to LSU.

Lake Mary junior Lauryn Finley tied for 13th with a 150 two-day total. Senior Arenui Faana was 21st at 153.

On the boys side, Dr. Phillips wasn’t able to catch eventual champion Fleming Island, which shot 583 for the two days. The Panthers were third with 608 while Windermere was 10th with 630.

“They shot about the same as yesterday. We never got to that other gear like we have done all year,” DP coach Jerry Updike said. “The goal is to get to state and challenge for a title, so this is a good way to finish for our seniors.”

The Panthers had five seniors who have played in the state finals multiple times. Two of them — Brandon Lohr and Taneesh Sirivolu — tied for sixth for the top area boys golfer with 146.

Varsity Report: Bishop Moore, Lake Mary, Winter Park close in on state titles in golf, volleyball https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/10/varsity-report-winter-park-bishop-moore-volleyball-state-semi-4a-swimming-3a-state-golf/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 20:36:34 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11947694 The Bishop Moore girls volleyball team is a win away from making history.

The Hornets pulled away from Bishop Kenny (23-8) of Jacksonville to win in four sets in a Friday morning FHSAA Class 4A state semifinal at Polk State College in Winter Haven.

The game scores were 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23 as Bishop Moore moved to within one victory of standing alone with an Orlando area record of seven state titles in the sport.

Area No. 1 Winter Park pulled out yet another five-set win in its 7A semifinal victory against Jupiter and will join the Hornets in playing for a state championship on Saturday.

Volleyball powers Winter Park, Lake Highland, Bishop Moore, Orangewood reach FHSAA final four

Bishop Moore (23-8) was spurred on by more than 200 of its students who made the one-hour trip to support the team.

“To have our student body behind us was really like a 12th man,” Hornets coach Tanya Jarvis Starrett said.

Sophia Iglesias, a senior, led the Hornets with 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Leah McDonald had 11. Defensively, junior Anika Groom had 22 digs and Emily Schellenberg had 20. Senior outside hitter Sofia Velt contributed 8 digs.

“Bishop Kenny is an extremely disciplined defensive team,” Starrett said. “We knew we were going to have to work hard to score points, and we executed our game plan.”

Bishop Moore will face No. 1-ranked Miami Gulliver Prep (28-3) in Saturday’s 3 p.m. final.

The Hornets played Gulliver earlier this season in the Swing For A Cure tournament and lost 2-0 in two tightly contested sets in the championship match on Oct. 7.

“That was halfway through the season,” Starrett said. “We didn’t have one of our middles. I think both teams have improved and changed.”

Gulliver defeated Academy of the Holy Names 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21 in its semifinal.

Winter Park prevails

The streak continues.

Winter Park scored its 22nd consecutive volleyball win Friday, holding off resilient Jupiter for a 3-2 win in a Class 7A semifinal.

The victory catapulted the Wildcats (29-3) into the state-final match at 6 p.m. Saturday at Polk State College. They will face the winner of Friday’s second semifinal, which matched top-ranked Tampa Plant (22-3) against Doral Academy (23-7) of Miami-Dade.

“They just want to win,” Winter Park coach Stephanie Gibson said of her team. “They think one match at a time.”

Winter Park won its first two sets 25-18 and 24-23, but Jupiter rallied to capture the next two, 24-26 and 22-25, forcing the fifth set.

Winter Park took a 6-2 lead in the fifth set and then stepped on the gas to win 15-4.

“This team has done this so many times this year,” Gibson said. “There have been 13 matches this season that we have been down and had to fight our way back. They find a way.”

Winter Park was led by Fallon Stewart with 23 kills and 19 digs. Amelia Mancino produced 22 kills and 18 digs. Emma Ortiz was clutch with 37 digs and Isabel Incinelli had 13.

Winter Park’s girls have won four state championships — all under the watchful eye of Gibson. The last was 2013.

“It is always fun playing for a state title and that is why we are here,” Gibson said.

Lake Mary leads state golf

Lake Mary put itself in prime position to win a third consecutive FHSAA girls golf Class 3A state championship by shooting a 298 team total on Mission Inn’s Las Solinas course on Friday.

The Rams are 18 shots in front of Niceville (316). St. Cloud (332) and DeLand (334) are third and fourth with 18 holes to go on Saturday.

Ryleigh Knaub shot a 2-under-par 70 for Lake Mary. She trails the individual leader, Dannika Hines of Tampa Steinbrenner, by two shots.

Olympia’s Emma Rynn is third at 71.

In its third straight November trip to the FHSAA golf finals, a senior-laden Dr. Phillips boys squad is in its best position after the first day.

Two years ago, the Panthers played poorly after winning a region title. Last year, Hurricane Nicole shortened the event to one day and DP again fell short.

On Friday, after its second regional title in three years, DP shot 302 and is in the hunt on the El Campeon course. The Panthers trail frontrunner Fleming Island by 10 shots.

“Last year we were doing great and the hurricane happened,” Panthers coach Jerry Updike said. “We played well today, especially Brandon [Lohr] and Taneesh [Sirivolu] scrambled well out there.”

Windermere stands sixth at 313.

Lohr is tied for second individually with a 2-under-par 70. Sirivolu is five strokes back at 73.

Also shooting 73 were Hagerty’s Arth Sinha and Windermere’s Cameron Baez while brother Carson Baez shot 74.

FHSAA state golf: Baez brothers compete for Windermere; Lake Mary and TFA lead area girls contenders https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/07/fhsaa-state-golf-baez-brothers/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 20:33:45 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11939868 It’s been like clockwork for the Windermere boys golf team.

As October morphed into the FHSAA state finals this month, the Wolverines took their game up a notch and solidified themselves as a state contender.

They’re being led by brothers, who are taking their friendly competition up a notch to help a team that hopes to claim an elusive state championship in Friday-Saturday’s Class 3A state tournament at Mission Inn Resort & Club located at Howey-in the Hills.

Windermere finished two shots behind rival Dr. Phillips in last week’s 3A Region 2 tournament, but that back and forth has been a theme this season.

In district play it was the Wolverines on top with the Panthers five strokes behind in second.

At the Metro Conference meet, the margin also was five with talented DP prevailing.

In Windermere’s Wolverines vs. the World meet, the host was the top local team out of 29 schools in third place, one shot ahead of the Panthers.

“We’ve been rotating back and forth with each better in every other meet, so I hope that pattern continues for state,” Windermere coach Eric Bacon said, only half joking since golfers are quite superstitious.

Senior Carson Baez, a University of Richmond commit, has been playing well. Junior Cameron Baez has been matching his older brother for the last month, taking his play up a notch.

Both made the 2022 All-Area team. This year Carson is the No. 2 area player in iWanamaker golf app rankings, behind Lake Mary Prep senior Barry Zhang. They are followed by West Orange junior Shawn Coultoff and Cameron.

“There always has been and always will be a healthy competitive relationship between me and my brother,” Carson said. “Even outside of golf, there’s always been a competitive relationship in whatever we do. Cameron always makes everything we do together a competition, even the absolute smallest things.”

In golf, that can mean practice sessions with one challenge after another: “Closest to the flag on the range? I bet I can beat you in a putting contest. Wanna have a match?”

Carson says Cameron takes competition more seriously.

“We end up being neck and neck with me beating him most of the time by only a stroke or two, which I won’t gloat about,” Carson said. “But whenever he does end up beating me, I never hear the end of it. It’s a little brother thing to make me mad.”

Cameron has a somewhat sentimental reason for the competitiveness.

“It’s fun playing against a soon to be D-I golfer and holding him to it when I get the better of him on the course on certain days,” he said. “But there’s only so much left that I can play with him before I have to wait to face him in amateur events, and later in college, so I’m squeezing in a lot of victories against him.”

In this year’s region meet, Carson shot 69 to edge Cameron by one stroke for medalist honors.

At district, Cameron shot 68 to edge Carson by a stroke for medalist.

In the Metro meet, both shot 66. At Wolverines vs. the World, Carson shot 137 (67-70) while Cameron shot 138 (70-68). At the Qdoba, Cameron had two rounds of 71 (142), five shots better than Carson’s 147.

Their back and forth can only help the Wolverines.

Dr. Phillips has proven to be a worthy opponent and contender for the 3A state title.

The Panthers are led by seniors Taneesh Sirivolu (69 region score), Brandon Lohr (72) and AJ Whitten (72).

In Class 1A, The First Academy (295), Lake Highland Prep (300), Lake Mary Prep (301) and Circle Christian (304) notched the top four places in the Region 2 boys meet at Hawkstone Country Club. All four earned berths in the 1A state tournament, Nov. 14-15, at Mission Inn.

Lake Mary Prep won the 1A title in 2020 as the last Orlando area team to win a boys team title. The last local 3A champion was Winter Park in 2018.

Can girls dominate?

Lake Mary’s two-time defending state champion girls team is again peaking at the perfect time.

The Rams set a school record with a 279 team score in the 3A Region 1 meet at Hawkstone Country Club. Ryleigh Knaub, a junior, shot 65 as the top individual in that meet, matching her 65 district tournament win.

Lake Mary’s momentum has been boosted by its talented supporting cast.

When senior starter Arenui Faana got sick a ninth grade reserve, Eli Chon, shot the team’s third-best score (73) in the region meet.

“She stepped up when we needed her,” said veteran Rams coach Dennis Burchill.

In addition, sophomore Meyher Khokhar scorched the back nine with five birdies and an eagle on the 17th for 6-under-par 30 and an overall round of 67.

In Class 1A, girls teams from The First Academy, Lake Mary Prep, Windermere Prep and Circle Christian have combined to win 13 consecutive championships. That streak may be challenged by Florida Atlantic University High School, which shot 284 to win its Region 4 meet ahead of another Boca Raton school, St. Andrews (292), and Sagemont Prep (298) which is another South Florida squad.

Defending state champion TFA won Region 2 in tough, windy conditions at Cocoa Beach Country Club with 302. Lake Mary Prep (314), Windermere Prep (315) and Circle Christian (317) were bunched up from second to fourth in that meet.

Thanks to the at-large berths based on regular-season and postseason performance, all four Central Florida powerhouse teams advanced to try to keep Central Florida’s 1A dominance rolling.

St. Cloud, Lake Nona, DeLand and Winter Park join Lake Mary in the 3A girls tournament.

Boys teams in the 1A competition are Lake Mary Prep, Circle Christian, TFA and Lake Highland Prep.

Lake Nona and Winter Park are in the 3A boys tournament.
