NCAA transfer portal still crushing high school players’ dreams | Recruiting Insider https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/14/ncaa-transfer-portal-crushing-dreams-of-high-schoolers/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 00:17:55 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11962456 For anyone who considers all the lingering issues of COVID to have evaporated, think again.

While many businesses have recovered, many still struggle. And one of the hardest hit and most affected groups has been high school student athletes hoping to move on to play college sports. The most devastating effect, arguably, has been to football.

The NCAA figured the answer to COVID was to give student/athletes the benefit of an extra year of eligibility. The NCAA also decided to change the rules for transfers, allowing transferring student-athletes to have immediate eligibility.

It’s become a frenzy. Coaches are recruiting players who are on other colleges rosters.

NCAA’s transfer portal has become big, fat joke | Commentary

Some coaches, including Dabo Swinney at Clemson, refused to bow to the chaos and held steady on a vow to stay out of the transfer-portal business. Most, however, such as Deion Sanders (Colorado) and Mike Norvell (Florida State), loaded up with experienced players who already had a taste of the college life.

No one can blame them. Rules are rules, and if you give a coach a little extra rope, well, he’s going to sling it like he’s a cowboy. If coaches can find an advantage in the big-money world of college football, the advantage will be had.

That’s where high school athletes come into play, or get knocked out of play.

Most college football coaches would rather take a player who has experience before a player fresh out of high school.

But what does that mean for high schoolers nearing graduation?

“This all really started last year, with those seniors,” Jones High coach Elijah Williams said. “We had Power 5 kids who were dropping to FCS schools, and FCS kids were going D-II. A guy like Anthony Rucker should have gone FBS, but he ended up going to North Carolina A&T.

“If I’m a college coach and I’m on the bubble, I’m [not taking a] high school kid. It’s killing high school recruiting. I think the NCAA needs to put in some restrictions, like you can only have a certain amount of transfers per year. That way you can keep the pipeline to the high schools going.”

Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick agrees.

“I’m sure I’m no expert on it, but I’ve had enough conversation with college recruiters who have come through our school and talked to a number of high school coaches and we all seem to be saying the same thing,” Hedrick said. “Because of the transfer portal colleges coaches, who in previous years would go into high schools and sign the vast majority of their recruiting class each year, are now getting a very small portion of their recruits per year through high school.”

Recruiting traffic has slowed during the spring, when coaches from all over the country would flock to Central Florida to scout the talent. Now, much of their attention is on the transfer portal list.

“It makes sense, because those kids are older, more experience, already trained up and ready to play,” Hedrick said, “But it’s really been difficult for the high school athlete. We’ve had some kids who I’m completely sure, four or five years ago, would have already had offers but now they don’t.”

State champion quarterback Blake Boda was one of those players affected last year. Boda led Cocoa to a Class S state championship and led the state in passing with just more than 4,000 yards and 49 touchdown throws. But he didn’t receive an FBS offer until late in the recruiting cycle. Coastal Carolina finally came into the picture and Boda jumped at the opportunity.

Colleges are limited to signing 25 high school recruits every year, but many schools are not even approaching that number now.

For the 2023 recruiting class, FSU signed 17 high school players and 14 transfers (two from junior colleges). It’s obviously working out for Norvell and the Seminoles, who are on the brink of making it into the College Football Playoff.

Florida signed 20 high schoolers and brought in 14 transfers (two juco). That didn’t catapult the Gators to instant success, but it’s obvious the Gators are playing along.

The king of them all of course was Sanders at Colorado. Coach Prime signed 17 high school players, but had a whopping 55 transfers (four juco). That’s close to half of the 113-player Colorado roster. It’s crazy, but legal, and the Buffs have three more wins than last year to show it worked to a degree.

Coaches don’t want limitations, but the high schoolers are seeing their dreams dashed. Kids are now beginning to aim lower, which is rather disheartening for any athlete. It’s not just football. This issue has trickled down to every sport.

The NCAA will surely need to do something. It’s the right thing to do to at least give high school athletes a shot at realizing their dreams. This year’s crop of prospects includes good players such as DeLand’s TJ Moore and Javon Ross; Jones’ George Brown IV, Tyrin Randle and James Chenault; Olympia’s Josh Evans; Mainland’s Ramon McCullough; Dr. Phillips’ Fred Thomas and on and on and on. They may end up settling for FCS programs.

There is nothing wrong with playing at the lower level. Loads of NFL players came out of non-FBS programs, but these players were hoping to play at the highest level. It’s no fun entering college on a disappointing note. Something needs to be done.

Could Gators lose committed players?

Florida coach Billy Napier appeared to be doing quite well two weeks ago, before the Georgia blowout. With the Gators struggling at 5-5, and no relief in sight, it’s not looking good for his current recruiting class. The Gators have lost two commitments since Georgia and have dropped from the No. 3 recruiting class in the country to fourth, according to 247Sports.

They now have 20 commitments and there is talk that Florida will lose 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman Amaris Williams, of Clinton, N.C. The big man is now considered a heavy Ohio State lean, although he has yet to decommit. Williams was offered by the Buckeyes in early October and then took an official visit to Columbus on Oct. 21.

It could be a trend as the early National Signing Day, Dec. 20, approaches.

Noah Grubbs still lighting it up

If you haven’t seen Noah Grubbs, Lake Mary’s elite sophomore quarterback, buy a ticket. The Rams face Jacksonville Mandarin on Friday night at home in the second round of the state playoffs and there are likely to be plenty of fireworks from Grubbs.

This kid has tremendous talent and he has a bevy of standout receivers in Caden Harshbarger, Carson Hinshaw, Logan Cook and Carson Friedman. Grubbs surveys the field as well as anyone, locates his receivers and delivers the ball in spots where only the receiver can make the play. His accuracy is uncanny.

Grubbs has thrown for 3,515 yards and 49 touchdowns and has the Rams thinking state title after they survived a scare in the first round against upstart Boone, winning 42-38. The Rams defeated Mandarin 36-14 earlier this season, and I’m looking for more of the same.

Hats off also to Lake Mary coach Scott Perry. The former Gators offensive lineman is one of the longest tenured coaches in Central Florida (19 seasons). He’s a great coach and his kids play hard.

Class 1A state golf: Mi Li leads but area teams play catch up to extend 13-year title streak https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/14/fhsaa-1a-state-golf-tournament-1114/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 23:11:54 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11963089 It’s going to take some work for an Orlando area girls golf team to keep a 13-year streak of team titles alive in Wednesday’s final day of the FHSAA Class 1A state tournament at Mission Inn Golf Club.

Boys teams from The First Academy and Lake Mary Prep are in better position to claim a championship with 18 holes to go on the El Campeon Course after Tuesday.

TFA shot 301 and trails Benjamin School of Palm Beach by 3 shots. Lake Mary Prep is 5 shots back at 303.

TFA was led by sophomore Mingbo Jiang with 71. That puts him five strokes behind leader Alexander Weinberg of Pine Crest. Palmer Haynes is close behind with 73 for the Royals.

Lake Mary Prep in 2020 was the last local boys team to take home a 1A title.

“I’m very happy with how we played today in tough conditions with rain off and on and some wind,” Griffins coach Brent Herold said. “We had some unlucky things happen to some of the guys, but we’re in a good position.”

One of the unlucky holes was No. 4 for senior Barry Zhang, who is in 11th place with 74. His tee shot veered toward the left rough, but he was unable to find the ball in the allotted time. That meant teeing off again, and the result was a double bogey.

“Those two shots [above par] would’ve put us tied for second,” Herold said.

In girls play, Florida Atlantic University High School of Boca Raton shot a 282 team total and is nine shots ahead of TFA (291), which is one of four area private schools that have dominated 1A competition.

Scores were collectively lower for girls on the Las Colinas Course. TFA junior Mi Li, the reigning 1A state champion and Orlando Sentinel Player of the Year, is in first place with an opening 66.

Li shot 66 to win last year’s 1A individual title and led TFA to its fourth team championship in six years. The second round of play was canceled due to complications caused by Hurricane Nicole.

Orlando area shines in FHSAA girls golf championship race (again)

“It was a rough start for us today, but I’m proud with how the team fought until the end,” Royals’ coach Victoria Tanco said. “Mi played lights out again with five birdies and the rest pars.”

Montverde Academy senior Victoria Renzi shot 67 and is in second place, one shot ahead of Windermere Prep eighth grader Ava Zhang (68).

Circle Christian sophomore Isabella Dovhey and Lake Mary Prep senior Nancy Dai shot 2-under-par 70s.

FHSAA football playoffs continue with 12 from Orlando area; Master’s wins SSAA https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/13/fhsaa-football-playoffs-orlando-dr-phillips-lake-mary-masters-apopka/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 22:13:15 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11959406 If you can’t play perfect football at this point in the high school season, pouncing on the miscues by opponents is clearly the next best thing.

Dr. Phillips, Lake Mary and Apopka each capitalized when they needed to most on Friday in order to advance past the regional quarterfinal round.

Those teams are among 12 programs from the Orlando area still standing in the Florida High School Athletic Association postseason.

“Playoff football is just about running the ball, stopping the run and turnover margin, and whoever can win the special-teams battle,” DP coach Rodney Wells said following a 17-15 win at rival Olympia. “Tonight we did a solid job in all phases of the game.”

The Panthers turned a roughing-the-punter penalty into a 30-yard field goal by Taylor Harris on their first drive. An interception by Orlendy Larosiliere — four plays after DP fumbled away the opening kick of the second half — led to a touchdown run by Cameran Dixon.

Amari Major, who was injured late in the game, put the Panthers in front for good on a 6-yard run in the final seconds of the third quarter.

That came after Olympia failed to convert on a 2-point conversion attempt. The Titans also missed an extra-point try in the first half that was made more difficult due to a penalty.

DP is one of three local teams on the road this week in regional semifinal games vs. out-of-area competition. The Panthers travel to No. 2 seed Tampa Plant.

Bishop Moore plays at Jacksonville Riverside in 2M Region 1.

Leesburg goes to defending state champion Lake Wales in Class 3 Suburban Region 2.

Orange City University and Orlando Christian Prep host playoff games in the second round, but both will be away from their on-campus stadiums, which do not meet FHSAA specifications for the playoffs.

University plays DeLand in a 4S district rematch at New Smyrna Beach Municipal Stadium. DeLand won the first meeting 14-3 on Oct. 20.

OCP faces Jacksonville Providence at a location to be determined. It will be Providence’s second trip to the Orlando area since winning 42-28 at The Master’s Academy on Oct. 13.

Master’s (9-2) claimed the independent Sunshine State Athletic Association championship Saturday night in Lakeland. Nazir McMillian intercepted a pass at the 17-yard line with under two minutes to go to ensure a 34-27 win over Fort Lauderdale’s Westminster Academy (9-2).

Jackson Stretcher, an eighth-grader, passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another for the Eagles. Jake Hormell caught a TD pass just before halftime to snap a 20-20 tie. The game was interrupted in the second half by a lengthy lightning delay.

Lake Mary super sophomore quarterback Noah Grubbs overcame two interceptions and a lost fumble in a 4M Region 1 quarterfinal while rallying from a 17-point deficit at No. 8 seed Boone.

The Rams blocked a field goal attempt midway through the fourth quarter and Dylan Wilson intercepted a pass with one minute to spare to close out a wild 42-38 win.

Grubbs ended the night 30-of-49 passing for 510 yards with 5 TDs and one rushing touchdown. He connected with Carson Hinshaw on a 14-yard completion for the game-winner with 1:43 to go.

“I’m proud of my guys for fighting the entire game and never giving up until we took the lead,” Lake Mary coach Scott Perry said afterward. “We earned an advance to next week, so I’m happy about that. We’ve got to get better so we can earn another one.”

Grubbs enters Friday’s game at home vs. Jacksonville Mandarin with 49 passing TDs in 2023, which ties current Crawfordville Wakulla senior Haden Klees for the third-most total in a single season in Florida high school history alongside Cocoa’s Blake Boda (2022), Wellington’s Shannon Patrick (2014) and Miami Northwestern’s Jacory Harris (2007).

Klees’ team is 11-0 and still alive in Class 2S.

Lake Nona’s Tucker Israel and Tampa Jefferson’s Quentin Williams each passed for 56 TDs during the 2014 season. Aaron Murray threw 51 TD passes in 2007 for Tampa Plant.

Lake Mary defeated Mandarin 34-16 on Sept. 29. A win for the Rams would mean another home game in the regional final round vs. Apopka or Sanford Seminole.

The Blue Darters, state runners-up in three of the past four years, needed big plays on defense and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to outpace Evans for a 22-13 win.

“It felt like we came out and dominated on both sides of the ball, and special teams especially,” said Apopka’s Antwone Robinson, who blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. “Momentum was high at the beginning of the game. We’ve just got to continue to have the momentum like we had in the first quarter.”

Apopka plays at Seminole and undefeated Edgewater is home against Jones in enticing local district rivalries that have produced head-turning outcomes in recent years.

Lake Minneola is home as the No. 2 seed in 4S Region 2 vs. Wiregrass Ranch out of Wesley Chapel.

Tickets for regional tournament games are available for $10 at the GoFan website.

Friday’s schedule for regions involving Orlando area teams includes team seeding based on FHSAA playoff power rankings and, in parentheses,  win-loss records:

Winter Park and Bishop Moore fall to No. 1 opponents Plant and Gulliver in state volleyball finals https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/11/winter-park-bishop-moore-fhsaa-state-volleyball-championship/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 03:24:38 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11947873 Winter Park’s girls volleyball team ran into an unstoppable force and saw its 22-match winning streak come to an end in Saturday night’s Class 7A state championship match.

The Wildcats (29-4) were swept 3-0 by Tampa Plant (25-3) at Polk State College in Winter Haven.

The Panthers were ranked No. 1 and Winter Park was No. 2 across all seven classifications in the FHSAA power rankings.

“They played amazing defense,” Winter Park coach Stephanie Gibson said of the Panthers. “Everything we handed them offensively; they handled it defensively. They are just 6-foot across the line. I have to give Plant a lot of credit.”

Plant won the sets 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 at Polk State College in Winter Haven.

“[The game plan] was to get them out of their system. We wanted to serve tough, and we have some pretty good servers, but they just handled everything. We were not able to swing as much down the line as we wanted to,” Gibson said.

Winter Park was led by Fallon Stewart with 13 kills and 10 digs. Isabel Incinelli added 10 kills while Emma Oritz came up with a stunning 26 digs. Amelia Mancino had 16 digs with 3 kills, and Sarah Webb finished with 13 digs and 1 kill.

Winter Park volleyball girls want to match big brothers’ state championship

“Going into this season we really didn’t expect to go this far with such a good record,” Stewart said. “We had a goal in mind, which was to get better every single day at practice. So as the season went on, the goal became more tangible and more real. Once we got into the playoffs, we knew it was do-or-die at this point.”

Stewart signed with Cincinnati and Ortiz signed with Syracuse two days before they won their Friday semifinal.

“I love this team with my whole heart. This team had the most amount of heart of any team I have seen in my life. We went out with love for each other,” Stewart said.

Plant (25-3) was led by Maggie Dostic with 18 kills and 16 digs. Bella Lee had 30 digs, and Kaylee Peper had 12 kills and 3 digs. Lara Matta had 5 kills and 12 digs while Ella Horvick finished with 13 digs.

“Our game plan was to do us. If you focus too much on the other team, you lose your thoughts. So we made sure to do what we do best,” Plant coach McKensie Herold said. “It was just a great ride the whole time. We always talk team first. It was selfless and that’s how we got here.”

Varsity Report: Bishop Moore, Lake Mary, Winter Park close in on state titles in golf, volleyball

Hornets fall to Gulliver

The seventh title will have to wait.

Bishop Moore’s bid for a record-setting girls volleyball state championship fell short against No. 1-ranked Miami Gulliver Prep in Saturday morning’s 4A title match.

Gulliver (29-3) dominated the first game, 25-12, but the Hornets evened the score with a 25-17 second-set win before the Raiders closed out the match 26-24, 25-21.

“For the most part, I believe we executed what we wanted to do,” said Bishop Moore coach Tanya Jarvis Starrett, now in her 16th season with the program. “[Gulliver] had some extremely physical players. [Jackie Taylor] and [Julia Rose Rivera] are very elite on their offense, and their setter [Haley Brenner] does a really good job of getting them the ball.”

Bishop Moore (22-9) has won six state championships; two when Starrett was a player and four more under her leadership as head coach. The Hornets share the Orlando area record with Lake Highland Prep and The First Academy — who also own six title trophies.

Bishop Moore was led by Anika Groom with 17 kills and 12 digs while Emily Schellenberg had 23 digs and 6 kills. Leah McDonald had 8 kills and 3 digs. Sophia Ingelias finished with 7 kills and 11 digs.

“None of us really thought we were out of it,” said Schellenberg, a senior outside hitter and four-year varsity player. “There was never a negative moment. We kept positive, and we would say, ‘Next ball,’ and did our very best.

“Being a Bishop Moore volleyball player is so much more than a win-loss record. I have gotten so many skills and built so many relationships and that is what is important.”

Gulliver was led by Taylor with 26 kills, 6.5 blocks and 4 digs. Brenner came up with 23 digs and 7 kills while Rivera finished with 13 kills.

“[Bishop Moore] is a great team and very well coached,” Gulliver coach Emilio Rodriguez said. “We are going to see them again somehow, somewhere. [Starrett] made a huge adjustment in the second set and we had to change our defensive rotations around just to pick up some of the short stuff.”

Lake Mary 3-peats as FHSAA 3A girls golf state champion https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/11/lake-mary-fhsaa-3a-girls-golf-champions/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 00:20:59 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11954754 HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS — No matter what sport or level of play, the expectation of winning brings with it plenty of pressure. Much of that is self-induced.

But the Lake Mary girls golf team overcame that pressure to win another Class 3A state title Saturday at Mission Inn-Las Colinas Golf Course.

The Rams posted a two-day score of 600 (298-302) to defeat runner-up Doral by 53 strokes. It’s their third straight title and 10th overall.

The win extends Central Florida’s dominance in girls golf with at least one team state champ for the 19th consecutive season.

“The girls feel like everyone expects them to win, so the challenge is to make sure they focus without thinking about that [on the course],” said Rams coach Dennis Burchill after receiving a balloon from his players on Veterans Day in honor of his service. “I tell the girls this is a great experience every year and to take it all in since each year and title is different.”

Orlando area shines in FHSAA girls golf championship race (again)

St. Cloud was fourth with 659. DeLand was fifth at 662, led by the top local finisher McKenzie Coody. The senior was tied for fourth with 145 after carding four straight birdies on the back nine.

“It was a nice feeling getting those birdie on the 10th through 13th holes after having to grind through yesterday’s round,” said Coody, who was one shot off the lead after that streak. “Once I bogeyed 16, that took a toll emotionally.”

This was the first time DeLand’s girls golf team advanced to the state tournament.

Lake Mary’s Ryleigh Knaub was in contention early on the back nine before a pair of bad holes dropped her to a tie for seventh with 146.

“It’s really hard to stay positive, but I can smile about it now,” she said. “The team won and that’s more important.”

The junior said Mission Inn’s Las Colinas course doesn’t match up with her game as well as others.

Besides the team win, another bit of good news for Knaub is that she finalized her college choice just before the state finals after months of visits. She committed to LSU.

Lake Mary junior Lauryn Finley tied for 13th with a 150 two-day total. Senior Arenui Faana was 21st at 153.

On the boys side, Dr. Phillips wasn’t able to catch eventual champion Fleming Island, which shot 583 for the two days. The Panthers were third with 608 while Windermere was 10th with 630.

“They shot about the same as yesterday. We never got to that other gear like we have done all year,” DP coach Jerry Updike said. “The goal is to get to state and challenge for a title, so this is a good way to finish for our seniors.”

The Panthers had five seniors who have played in the state finals multiple times. Two of them — Brandon Lohr and Taneesh Sirivolu — tied for sixth for the top area boys golfer with 146.

Windermere High claims 7 state titles, Boone 2 in 4A state swimming https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2023/11/11/varsity-report-bishop-moore-volleyball-windermere-swim-title/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 23:31:43 +0000 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/?p=11947790 Windermere High junior Ryan Erisman is one of a select list of Florida high schoolers who have turned in swimming times that qualify him for next summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials.

His speed showed Saturday in state championship victories at the FHSAA Class 4A swimming and diving championships in Ocala.

Erisman dominated the boys 200-yard freestyle final with a time of 1 minute, 36.13 seconds and later led all the way in winning the 500 free at 4:22.05. He added a third gold medal as anchorman for the Wolverines’ victorious 200 free relay.

Both of his individual times were well under the standard for automatic All-America (A-A) status as set by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

Windermere had two other individual state champs as the highest-placing Orlando area program. Walter Kueffer won the boys 50 free in 20.71 seconds. And senior Addison Reese swam a 52.99 prelim time and then won the girls 100 backstroke decisively in 53.45 seconds at the indoor Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training (FAST) center.

Reese placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.67).

Boone junior Arianna Wertheim swam A-A times while winning the girls 500 free (4:49.68) and taking third in the 200 free (1:48.24).

The Braves had a second state champion in senior diver Lanie Gutch, who won by a big margin. Gutch was the 4A champ in that event as a freshman and was runner-up as a sophomore and junior.

Winter Park senior Adrianna Lojewski won the girls 50 free with an A-A time of 23.07 seconds. She placed second in the 100 free at 50.43.

Windermere’s relays excelled.

The Wolverines won the girls 200 free relay in 1:33.63 with Reese, Hollace Stokes, Aidyn Reese and Brooke Larweth each swimming a lap.

The Reese sisters teamed with Larweth and Maddie Reynolds to place second in the 200 medley relay (1:42.21). Both of those performances were A-A times.

Reynolds, Carolina Daher, Lucy Megginson and Lillian Krstolic added a second-place finish in the 400 free relay for the Wolverines.

Kueffer led off Windermere’s winning boys 200 free relay (1:22.47), followed by Lawson Seward, Roberto Zarate and Erisman.

Erisman, Kueffer and Zarate teamed with Rory Connelly to place second in the 400 relay.

And Kueffer, Seward, Adrian Garcia and Ian Cazella combined for a runner-up showing in the medley relay.

Zarate was runner-up in the boys 100 butterfly (48.76) after finishing fourth in the 200 free.

Reynolds finished fourth in both the 100 free and 100 backstroke.

Larweth was third at 23.43 and Lake Brantley freshman Hana Sungail finished fifth (23.64) in the 100 free. Sungail placed fifth in the 100 free.

Lake Brantley junior Danzhel Tuliao placed third in the boys breaststroke, one spot ahead of Winter Park junior Ian Heysen.

Hagerty sophomore Noah Stasik was the runner-up in boys diving.

Olympia junior Tristan Bonnet-Eymard took third in the boys 100 free.

West Orange was fourth at 1:37.90 in the girls 200 free relay and third in the 400 relay ahead of Winter Park and Lake Brantley. Ella Klyce anchored both of those races for the Warriors.
